Chinese vs. Western Bed: Which One Is better?

Chinese and Western cultures are very different in many terms. From medicine, cooking, working, greeting people to the way people express thought and feelings through art, music and painting. Even when it comes to sleeping, these two cultures have different standards. For example, Chinese people have for centuries been sleeping on wooden beds, also known as tatami.

Although today tatami beds are hard to find, certain things have not changed. Chinese people still prefer to sleep on a firm surface or better said, a firm mattress. And this seems to offer numerous health benefits (no more back pain). On the other hand, in the Western culture it seems like everything revolves around comfort. Hence the soft and high mattresses. People from Western cultures prefer to buy a mattress which has greater volume and soft.

The question is, which is better - Chinese or Western bed? Here are the advantages and disadvantages of both types so you can decide which one is better for you.

Chinese Bed

When we say “Chinese bed”, we refer to a bed with a firm mattress. Let's take a look at the main advantages the firm mattress offers.

  • Better Spine Alignment – If you buy a mattress with firm structure, it will provide proper posture for your spine by keeping it in straight natural position.
  • Better Support – Firm mattress provides good support for your body while at the same time it provides comfort you need for restful and good night's sleep.
  • Proper Weight Distribution – To ensure good night sleep, it is important for the mattress to enable proper distribution of the body weight and prevent the body from sagging in one direction.

Western Bed

As we've mentioned before, the Western bed is all about a soft mattress that is positioned higher. The main advantages of the Western bed include:

Comfort – Main reason why most people in the Western countries prefer to buy a mattress that is soft is the comfort it provides.

Suitable For The Side Sleepers – While the hard mattress is recommended for those who sleep on stomach, the soft mattress is often recommended for the side sleepers. This is because if you sleep on one side on soft mattress, you are less likely to wake up with the pain in the side you were sleeping on.

As you can see, both bed types have advantages and disadvantages. However, if you want to ensure a good night's sleep, take a tip from Chinese people and buy a mattress that's firm.
